Il nome deriva dal mwdggreco mwdwmweaᾶκρος, mweqàcros, cioè mwegalto, sommo, e mwewmwfaσὼμα, mwfqsòma, cioè mwfgcorpo, e mwfwmwgaοἶδα, mwgqòida, cioè mwggche è simile, che somiglia.

Le tre specie oggi note di questo genere sono state reperite in mwhqAfrica: la specie dall'mwhgareale più vasto è la mwhwA. linnaei, rinvenuta in varie località dell'mwiqAfrica occidentale, mwigcentrale e mwiworientalecite-ref-araneidae-1-0[1].

Rimosso dalla sinonimia con mwkgmwkwGasteracantha mwlaSundevall, 1833 a seguito di un lavoro di mwlqBenoit (1962a)cite-ref-araneidae-1-1[1].

Dal 1982 non sono stati esaminati esemplari di questo generecite-ref-araneidae-1-2[1].
